Made entirely of 16mm footage filmed by Swedish journalists between 1967-1975, Black Power Mixtape is their journey through the culture and figureheads of the Black Power Movement. Left in a basement until now, the footage is absolutely stunning and this is combined with a gorgeous soundtrack provided by Questlove of The Roots.

There are numerous documentaries about this period and the culture, but what makes Black Power Mixtape stand out is just how classy it is. Throughout the film we hear from artists and activists involved in, or influenced by, the movement through audio commentary. The lack of talking heads keeps you focused in on the footage and provides subtle context without attempting to aggressively educate you. It’s an interesting way to feature contributors as it seemed that they were commenting while watching the film, a perfect way to include a vast array of voices and views without being obtrusive to the pacing of the story.

Broken into yearly chapters the story is obviously chronological and this keeps the pace fast. Luckily it avoids being a fumbling European view of US culture, but the journalists’ intrigue and naivete makes the footage far more accessible, and also unique, as they explore different aspects and speakers more likely to be overlooked by the US media at the time. Featuring figures such as Bobby Seale, Eldridge Cleaver, and Stokely Carmichael you get a sense of the enigmatic nature of the Movement’s leaders through their speeches, but also of them as people through footage filmed during their downtime. There is a particularly wonderful interview with Stokely Carmichael’s mother as Stokely takes over the role of interviewer as the Swedish journalists struggle. The range of footage with Angela Davis was by far the highlight of the film for me from her court case footage, to the only interview in her cell, you get an all encompassing view of an important figure in the movement often left out of similar films.

The subtlety of the film is its real strength and the enormous amount of footage from a multitude of approaches and view points makes Black Power Mixtape a joy to watch, while also being a very important cultural document. Add Questlove’s beautiful soundtrack into the mix and this a film that will have an extremely long life with an audience who will find a wonderful cinematic experience, and also a great way to learn from a film that shows a different view into an important cultural period.

Creative Review: So how did this job come about?
Vaughan Oliver: Sunday Best sent me a one line email asking if I'd like to work on a David Lynch release. So I replied to the email and asked, tongue in cheek of course - 'why me?'

CR: And their response?
VO: "We couldn't think of anyone more appropriate," they said.

CR: That's a good answer!
VO: To be honest, I've been wondering for three weeks if someone was taking the piss and winding me up. I kept thinking that the fellow must be surrounded by people that could have done the sleeve for him - and he had a fabulous show in Paris not all that long ago. I did initially wonder why he wasn't doing the artwork himself.

CR: So what's the starting point for designing a record sleeve for David Lynch - you listen to the music, right?
VO: That's right, have you heard the tracks? There is a lovely simplicity there that i can relate to. So my thought was to try to get the artwork to relate to that whilst capturing a more eerie dark atmosphere. My first port of call was photographer Marc Atkins. I've worked with him for about ten years and don't need to say much to him - he gets it straight away. This was always going to be an image-based, rather than a design-based project.

CR: What is your working process with Atkins?
VO: I sent him the music and the lyrics – "so tired of fire, so tired of smoke, send me an angel" – and asked Marc to give me an angel that moved out of the dark and into the light. Have you listened to I Know? I think it really works together - the bald headed man almost mouthing the lyrics with a halo of light and fire around him. For me, in terms of a marriage of music and graphics, it's worked fabulously."

CR: So did David Lynch get involved, did you speak to him?
VO: I had a free hand, he was really easy going about the whole process. We didn't get to speak head to head, but we communicated through the label and by all accounts he's very pleased with it all.

CR: OK - the single was released digitally last week, but tell us about the physical releases - there's a deluxe CD pack in the pipeline, due for release end of January, is that right?
VO: The CD pack will be a triple-panel gatefold – with the Good Day Today image on the front and the I Know image on the back. Open the pack to find [an image of] a small drop of blood on a silvery surface. Open that panel up, so that the triple gatefold is fully open and there's another flap that folds over the middle panel from the top. Underneath is a postcard / print and underneath that is the CD tucked into a slot, so there's no plastic.

CR: And there's a vinyl package too?
VO: Yes, I'm working with The Vinyl Factory on that, which is a new experience for me. The pack will be triple gatefold too. Fold it out and there will be two records - one housed in each end panel of the sleeve. There will be a Good Day Today 180g vinyl record with the original track plus remixes, and the other 180g record will have I Know plus remixes on it. The inner sleeves that pull out will be printed in two different metallic colours and debossed wiht the scratchy type - which was created by Marc [Atkins]. The middle panel will have a 12" artwork printed and debossed on really nice stock. Marc and I will be signing the prints. There will also be a CD included with the vinyl pack that has all the tracks on it.

3D Projection mapping Toyota Auris

Here is a really innovative piece of new work from the guys at Glue Isobar in London, for the new Toyota Auris Hybrid that seems to be getting a month long launch party in the UK!

Instead of the usual 3D projection mapping onto a building, the guys at Glue Isobar worked to project a CG car directly onto a real Toyota Auris, with no less that 7 projectors helping to give a true 3D, 360 degree projection mapping experience on all sides of the car, so you could actually walk around and experience the visuals from any angle.

They used a mix keyframe, 2D, 3D, algorithmic and dynamic animation to deliver the experience, and it was all done up-close and personal at an intimate event in Shoreditch. You can check out the campaign site here.

Insane light-installation

Mother New York, Target and creative and production studio LEGS combine forces to pull of an epic 20-minute dance and light performance, using the Standard Hotel in New York as a vertical stage for a kaleidoscopic fashion show.

The show consisted of 61 dancers and 155 rooms at the Standard Hotel, transformed into pixels and backed by a 30-piece orchestra. Planted inn each room there was a long LED strip that could generate any colour in the spectrum, and while the different coloured lights flashed on and off in different rooms, the corresponding dancers strutted their stuff inside the rooms. The effect was a dazzling light show on an epic scale.

"Mother came up with the brilliant idea of using The Standard as a vertical stage for a dance and light performance. It was our job to take the colour theme and write a narrative using different colours as acts/chapters where each had its own musical, movement and lighting mood and style," explains LEGS member Geremy Jasper. "We had to give this giant event some form and flow and come up with many of the visual tricks and transitions and surprises."

A Swedish film director and editor. He was considered part of the now terminated Swedish multimedia collective Lucky People Center.

Söderberg is recognized for the work he has done for Madonna: he edited both the "Hung Up" (2005) and "Sorry" (2006) music videos, as well as footage from her 2004 documentary I'm Going To Tell You A Secret; he directed the "Sorry Remix" video backdrop for the Confessions Tour in 2006 and co-directed the "Hey You" video (2007) with Marcus Lindkvist, which consists mostly of images from different cultures and global warming. He also remixed and directed the controversial concert video "Get Stupid" for the Hard Candy tour.

He also created the popular web video-hacked viral for the strand Read My Lips on Swedish TV show Kobra, which featured Blair and Bush lip-synching a love song. This technique was also used in the 2005 film The Voice.

The final batches of Polaroid film pass their expiry date on September 30 2009. When these supplies either spoil or run out, the world will lose something special. The Impossible Project are racing to create a new instant film, but these are the last days of Polaroid images.

To celebrate the film’s life and mourn its passing, we’re asking Polaroid photographers around the world to post the last Polaroid they ever take to this site, creating an online archive of the final Polaroids in existence. Think of it as a wake for the Polaroid picture.

Edgar Müller - a Master of 3d Pavement Art - needed 5 days to the completion of this huge picture. Together with up to five assistant he painted all day long from sun rise to set. The enormous illusion is reached by applying the anamorphic technique to a huge pavement painting. Around 250 square meter large this picture is part of Edgar's newest project. He paints over urban areas to give them a different look and thereby challenge the audience's perception.

The effect of making animated swirls of color using handheld lights in motion is a familiar one, but it’s fantastic to see it start to cross over to the live arena. The project is the creation of Cologne collective Lichtfaktor and (in this video) light jugglers Optix.

Light painting is one thing, but given all you can do with cameras, there could be lots of interesting similar handmade visual projects out of the box. If you happen to be in the New York area this week, we certainly welcome visual projects at the Handmade Music event Thursday night - bring something to work on or try out on the spot, if you like! But a DIY visual event is most certainly needed, too. Handmade Motion, anyone?

"Pen Story" (again or before?)

Several PDN readers and at least one gadget blog have noticed striking similarities between a new viral ad on YouTube from Olympus and a stop-motion film by a Japanese artist who goes by the handle Dokugyunyu. The Olympus ad, entitled The PEN Story, employs stop motion to show a series of photo prints of a young man growing up and eventually attending the 50th anniversary reunion of his grammar school. At the end of the ad, Olympus touts its recently released EP-1 PEN camera.

A clever commercial with some impressive stop motion effects but was the concept stolen from Dokugyunyu? That's the conclusion that Gizmodo jumped to in a story this morning entitled "Olympus Stop-Motion EP-1 Ad Concept is Clever (Also, Stolen)."

Touted as "Nashville's most f*cked-up country band" by their label Merge Records, Lambchop was arguably the most consistently brilliant and unique American group to emerge during the 1990s. Their unclassifiable hybrid of country, soul, jazz, and avant-garde noise seemed at one time or another to drink from every conceivable tributary of contemporary music, its baroque beauty all held together by the surreal lyrical wit and droll vocal presence of frontman Kurt Wagner. Although Lambchop's ever-rotating roster would later expand to over a dozen members, the group formed in 1986 as a simple three-piece teaming Wagner, guitarist Jim Watkins, and bassist Marc Trovillion, former high school classmates already ten years removed from the educational system. Originally dubbed Posterchild, the trio made its earliest recordings in Trovillion's bedroom, self-releasing a series of cassettes with titles like I'm F*cking Your Daughter. In time, the lineup began to grow and the band regularly performed live in and around the Nashville area, often at the area record shop, Lucy's (not coincidentally owned by Wagner's wife, Mary).

Really nice work. "Lights on" is an audio visual performance created for the Ars Electronica museum in Linz, Austria, which has a facade that contains 1085 LED controllable windows. The windows' colors are changed in realtime with music that's broadcasted on speakers surrounding the building.

Myoung Ho Lee, from South Korea, has produced an elaborate series of photographs that pose some unusual questions about representation, reality, art, environment and seeing.

Simple in concept, complex in execution, he makes us look at a tree in its natural surroundings, but separates the tree artificially from nature by presenting it on an immense white ground, as one would see a painting or photograph on a billboard.

Todd Hido is a San Francisco-based artist whose work has been featured in ArtForum, The New York Times and Vanity Fair. His photographs are in the permanent collections of the Guggenheim, NYC, the San Francisco Museum, the Los Angeles County Museum and others. The editions of his books of photographs, Househunting and Outskirts, published 2001 and 2002 respectively, have both sold out.

Hido makes color photographs using available light and long exposures. His subjects are contemporary quotidian suburbia, empty of people and otherworldly, suggestive of abandonment and isolation. This very personal aesthetic stands out among those laying claim to the mantle of Walker Evans.

Todd Hido's photographs are also currently on view as part of the Heinz Architectural Center's "Terrain Vague" exhibition at the Carnegie Museum.

Jørgen Leth is a poet and film director who is considered a leading figure in the development of experimental documentary film making. Leth frequently works as a sports commentator for Danish television and owns the film production company, Sunset Productions.

Jørgen Leth was born June 14, 1937 in Århus, Denmark. Leth studied literature and antropolgy in Århus and Copenhagen, and he was a cultural critic (jazz, theater, film) for leading Danish newspapers from 1959 to 1968. His first book was published in 1962 and he has written ten volumes of poetry and four non-fiction books. Leth made his first film in 1963, and has since made forty films, many distributed worldwide. His most acclaimed work is the 1967 short film The Perfect Human, which was recently featured in the 2003 film The Five Obstructions by Lars von Trier. Leth work with sports documentaries is noted for bringing an epic, almost mythic, proportion to the field, as seen in Stars and Watercarriers (Stjernerne og Vandbærerne, 1973) and A Sunday in Hell (En forårsdag i helvede).

With an advertising degree in hand, Ohio-born Eric Aston’s intense interest in film and entertainment drove him to venture to Los Angeles in 2004. It was here, that he began his life-long dream of storytelling through visual mediums. After taking just one graphic arts course, Eric decided to pursue a design route full-time, and landed a graphic arts position in the downtown Los Angeles offices of CR&A Custom, a leader in the creation of promotional advertising pieces with high-profile clients such as Virgin, Puma, Honda, Bacardi and Universal. In 2008, Eric’s desire to make a strong impression on the art world prompted him to leave CR&A, to devote all of his creative efforts and attention to The Ultravelvet Collection.

Connecticut-born Meredith Rose began her love affair with photography at an early age, following her father on family excursions, shooting alongside him with an old, manual Cannon camera. A deep appreciation for, and the desire to capture, a still moment in time led Meredith to constantly keep a camera in-hand. While studying business at New York University, Meredith used her spare time and elective courses to formally study photography. Post-college, Meredith entered the corporate world, working for large luxury fashion retailers, such as Henri Bendel, and independent film producers, including those of Julia Roberts and Robert Evans. Meredith also produced promotional campaigns for New York Magazine and the Los Angeles Times. As she gathered knowledge of the film industry and began to collect the associated contacts, Meredith turned her sights towards Los Angeles. Upon her arrival here in 2006, Meredith’s desire to get back to her photography roots and her craving for independence from corporate America, led her to give up her board-room life to also work full-time on The Ultravelvet Collection.

Peter Kember (born 19 November 1965) is a British musician, more usually known as Sonic Boom. Kember and Jason Pierce (born on the same day in Rugby, Warwickshire) formed Spacemen 3 in 1985. Sonic Boom's first solo album, Spectrum, was recorded in 1989 while Spacemen 3 were still a going concern, and featured the other members of the group. However, by 1991 relations with Pierce had broken down, and while Pierce went on with the other members of Spacemen 3 to form Spiritualized, Kember recruited new musicians for the group Spectrum. He has also recorded as E.A.R. (Experimental Audio Research) - the two projects have existed in parallel, and recordings under both names occasionally only feature Kember. Kember has also played and collaborated with Stereolab and Yo La Tengo.

Initial Spectrum releases carried on from the sound of late-period Spacemen 3, featuring conventional songs and a regular band. First single "How You Satisfy Me" was an original composition reminiscent of 1960s garage bands. 1992's Soul Kiss (Glide Divine) was split between songs and longer experimental pieces featuring drones and repetition, and Highs, Lows and Heavenly Blows (1994) was also mainly song-oriented. Occasionally Jessamine and The Silver Apples have collaborated with Kember using the Spectrum name. From 1996 the name has been used for Kember's solo work, usually with Pete Bassman (Pete Bain) from the original Spacemen 3 lineup and recording engineer/musician Alf Hardy. The music made with Bain and Hardy was often in the same vein as E.A.R., reflecting an increased interest in vintage analogue synthesizers, especially those made by EMS. The most recent full-length Spectrum album is 1997's Forever Alien and Kember has not released music as Spectrum since 1999: a new album is nearing completion with Füxa's Randall Nieman and though partially on hold due to other recording and live commitments, is estimated for release in 2008.

Although the first E.A.R. album to be released (Mesmerised, 1994) was Kember on his own, the initial intention of E.A.R. was to record experimental "soundscape" music with collaborators. The second album (the first to be recorded, however) was Beyond the Pale (1996, recorded 1992), which featured My Bloody Valentine's Kevin Shields, Kevin Martin and AMM's Eddie Prévost. The album was remixed by German musician Thomas Köner in 1997, and released as The Köner Experiment. Prévost also appeared on Phenomena 256 (1996) and Millennium Music (1998), both of which featured a larger group of musicians. Data Rape (1998) was recorded solely by Kember, using the technique of circuit bending, which he continued to use on the EP Vibrations (2000) and album Continuum (2001). The latter two releases were made with assistance from Delia Derbyshire, formerly of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop, who also had a track named after her on the Spectrum album Forever Alien. The most recent E.A.R. release is Worn to a Shadow (2005).

Belgiskfödde Eric Michel Nilsson utbildades till spelfilmsregissör vid filmskolan IDHEC i Paris, på den tiden en samlingspunkt för flera av dåtidens stora regissörer som Alain Resnais, Jean-Luc Godard och Louis Malle. Tillbaka i Sverige som färdigutbildad regissör visade sig dock filmklimatet kallare än väntat. Kenne Fant, dåvarande chef för SF, var ständigt oanträffbar. Efter en tid fick Nilsson till slut en plats vid SVT:s nystartade dokumentärfilmsavdelning. Chefen för avdelningen, Lennart Ehrenborg, var starkt influerad av den brittiska ”free cinema”-rörelsen och satsade på unga förmågor (däribland Jan Troell, Lennart Forsberg m.fl.) vilka han gav mer eller mindre fria tyglar. Nilssons första uppdrag var att göra en film om tändstickor, vilket resulterade i Solstickan (1962). Efter den följde en rad formmässigt enkla dokumentärer, som Kök (1963) och Djurgårdsfärjan (1963), i regel utan ljud och enligt samtidens idéer om ett objektivt förhållningssätt till omgivningen. En film som Djurgårdsfärjan, som återger den korta färden mellan Slussen och Djurgårdskajen, ter sig idag ganska tråkig och meningslös. I Pressen hyllades dock denna typ av avskalade och ”direkta” filmer. Signaturen Robin Hood, en av dåtidens främsta filmkritiker, skrev begeistrat att ”ingen svensk filmare har hittils kommit [verkligheten] närmare än Eric M. Nilsson”. Att svensk tevefilm kunde vara så verklighetstrogen som, låt säga en film av Lindsay Anderson eller någon av hans franska kollegor nere på kontinenten, förvånade förmodligen både en och annan.

Frihetens portar öppnade sig ytterligare en aning för Eric M Nilsson och i mitten på 60-talet fick han och fotografen Åke Åstrand i uppdrag att åka till Frankrike och filma fritt. Resultatet blev en mängd kortare dokumentärer, om allt ifrån cirkusar och ålderdomshem till kloster och kurorter, alla i samma verklighetstrogna stil. Filmer som Passageraren (1966) och Eleonoras testamente (1967) innebär dock något av en brytpunkt i filmskapandet. Den förstnämda filmen skildrar en fiktiv resa, med utgångspunkt i ett stycke ur Claude Simons modernistiska roman Vinden (1957). Simons text är sprängfylld av ändlösa meningar – ett typiskt uttryck för den s.k. ”nya romanen” - vilket Nilsson parodiserar genom att klippa bort berättarröstens naturliga pauser och inandningar. Denna manipulation resulterar i en formlös ljudmatta, i egendomlig samklang med Simons text. Berättarröstens allvar och de illustrativa bilderna av resan ger ett skenbart episkt intryck i en film utan vare sig mening eller mål. I filmen förekommer en rad teman som återkommer i Nilssons senare produktion, inte minst den kritiska synen på språket som ett hinder för mänsklig interaktion (i intervjuer lyfter Nilsson gärna fram sitt eget möte med det svenska språket som tonåring som förklaring till sin misstro mot språket). Ett annat tema är resan, den verkliga såväl som den fiktiva, som bl. a återkommer i den suveräna trilogin bestående av filmerna Första resan (1993), Drömresan (1993) och Sista resan (1993). Passageraren möttes av god kritik på grund av dess poetiska ton och experimentella form, vilket ansågs banbrytande för dåtidens teveproduktioner. Eleonoras testamente börjar som ett regelrätt reportage om en trakt i Frankrike. Allt eftersom vecklar berättelsen ut sig till en snårig och absurd saga om en påhittad prinsessas tragiska levnadsöde. En berättelse utan någon förankring i verkligheten, med uppenbara historiska och geografiska felaktigheter. Det som gör filmen spännande är återigen berättarröstens sakliga och övertygande framtoning, vilket lär ha fått delar av testpubliken på SVT att ta sagan för sanning.

I slutet av 60-talet hamnade Eric M Nilsson i blåsvädret efter sin kontroversiella film En Skola (1968). Filmen är en kritisk granskning av den alternativa pedagogiken på Kristofferskolan i Stockholm. Den visar bl a hur lärare fostrar sina elever att associera mänskliga egenskaper (som snäll) med döda ting (som solen). En del kritiker anklagade Nilsson för partiskhet och frågan om dokumentärfilmens objektivitet aktualiserades. En kritiker i Aftonbladet, som själv hade barn i den nämnda skolan, skrev att ”televisionen befinner sig alltjämt på ett grottstadium som bildkonst, och ännu mer outvecklad är televisionens publik som saknar förmåga att läsa bilder, att uppfatta budskap i massmedia”. Jag har svårt att föreställa mig att en film som En skola skulle få någon att höja på ögonbrynen idag, med vår tids dolda kameror och effektsökande tevejournalistik. Man bör dock ha i åtanke att televisionen verkligen var ett ungt medium och att den allmäna debatten genomsyrades av mediekritiska inställningar som ovanstående och krav på absolut objektivitet. ”TV-analfabetismen”, skriver samma kritiker, ”är en fara”. Det är för övrigt frestande att se Nilssons senare filmer, som i allt högre grad kom att behandla begreppsparet verklighet och fiktion, sanning och lögn, i ljuset av En skola och den debatt som följde om dokumentärfilmens, och tevemediets, krav på objektivitet.

Nilsson fortsätter under hela 70-talet och framåt att göra filmer för SVT. Någon spikrak utveckling är svår att spåra, istället rör han sig relativt fritt mellan reportage i det tidiga 60-talets anda, intervjubaserade filmer, animationer och mer essäistiska filmer (vilka har föranlett kritiker att jämföra honom med bl.a Chris Marker, även om jag tycker att jämförelsen är ganska klen). Begrepp som kommunikation, begriplighet och dualiteten verklighet respektive fiktion utkristalliserar sig allt eftersom som några av de viktigaste ledmotiven. I många av sina bästa filmer undviker han ett tema, utan rör sig ledigt mellan olika frågeställningar och låter olika röster komma till tals i samtal utan något givet mål. 1991 gör han mästerverket Anonym, en mångbottnad och lekfull essäfilm i form av en deckargåta, som för fram anonymiteten som ett alternativ till, och om man så vill en kritik av, upphovsmannaskapet. Mannen från Podalida (1998) liknar den förra till formen, men är den film där språket som hinder diskuteras mest ingående. Pierre, mannen från Podalida, är en man som försöker bryta sig ur språkets fängelse, trotsa ordens utnötning, genom att blanda ihop sin egen språkcoctail med fonetisk släktskap med en rad kända språk. Liksom anonymiteten i Anonym förblir dock upproret mot språket blott en utopi. Människan är bunden vid lockelsen att uttrycka sig, liksom hon är dömd att leva bakom språkets galler.

Eric M Nilsson har länge förbisetts av forskare och kritiker (även om han fått viss återupprättelse på senare år). Det beror med all säkerhet på det medium han varit verksam i. Film skapad för teve har alltid haft en lägre status i förhållande till biograffilmen, på grund av tekniska aspekter såsom bild- och ljudkvalitet och bildskärmens storlek, men också på grund av mediets flyktighet och dess programform (med de teknologisk-historiska rötterna i direktsändningen och studioprogramet). Eller som en kritiker uttryckt det, apropå bristen på uppmärksamhet kring Eric M Nilssons egensinniga filmer, "att göra film för TV är som att skriva i vatten".

Goda nyheter är att PAN Vision ger ut en samling med Eric M Nilssons filmer på DVD. Inget datum är dock fastställt för release.

Jimmy LaValle, guitarist from San Diego, famous for the solo project The Album Leaf. Also played in California-based post-rock band Tristeza. LaValle has also performed in several other San Diego-area bands, including Swing Kids, The Locust, and GoGoGo Airheart. Jimmy LaValle had been playing guitar in the post-rock instrumental band Tristeza. Being a multi-instrumentalist, during downtime in the fall of 1998, he began playing drums for San Diego band GoGoGo Airheart. The Album Leaf supported Sigur Rós on their first full US tour. After a number of months touring with Sigur Rós, LaValle decided to leave Tristeza and focus on the Album Leaf full time.

"The Album Leaf is my little solo endeavor, my little toy" says LaValle in summation. "Its something to keep you happy when youre alone and frustrated, and sometimes frustrating in itself when it doesnt do exactly what you want. But still something fascinating."

"While the recent One Minute Film Festival was taking place (yes, yes, this exists — in America, naturally), the professionals of the profession acknowledged a different sort of minute, specifically, one of silence, in memory of Leila the mouse.

Actually, the mouse... well, Leila was a little rat, but in French those words are terribly lacking in grace; and yet Leila was grace itself; therefore, she will be a mouse for posterity.

Everyone has experienced this phenomenon: whenever a glance is cast your way for a certain length of time, you can feel it, and physically. It's what happened to me one day while I was working at my computers. Someone, somewhere, had fixed their gaze upon me, and so I looked carefully around — not the slightest human in sight. "Human"? Here was the error. As though there didn't exist other gazes. It was upon lowering my eyes that I saw that little creature standing up on its hind legs, so haughtily, and asserting by the repeated wrinkling of its nose an indisputable interest in my humble work. "What are you doing here, you?" — and at the time of posing the question I remembered that, in effect, my neighbor's daughter kept four small rats in a cage. No-one ever knew how the one who hadn't yet gone by the name of Leila had managed to escape, but here she was.

And yet this all happened on a Saturday afternoon, which in the twentieth arrondissement amounts to an early curfew. Put an other way, the humans of the place had gone away for the weekend; there wasn't a single boutique on the horizon where anything resembling a cage could be found; to allow her to roam about the studio was to risk losing her amid the jumble of boxes and piles; and to put her outside would be to expose her to the patrols of cats less responsive to her charm. What to do with her? I transformed a computer box into a temporary shelter, with holes for breathing — I came up with this by recalling some of David Carradine's lessons in Kung Fu — and I shut the lid again. In a flash she had been given her name. Two days earlier, Florence Aubenas [the Libération journalist who was abducted in Iraq, then released in June 2005 after being held for six months] had succeeded in the unprecedented exploit of" show so much class in describing so much suffering, I found simply dazzling. Yet we recall that her captors had changed her Infidel-name right away to another: Leila. And in the aforementioned flash I saw myself, in the eyes of the mouse, transformed into a captor. Of course it was for her own good, but what was it she saw in me? That this inordinate entity to whom she had gently come to pay a visit had shut her up inside of a box. "Pardon, Leila," were the words that came to me instinctively — and she had been baptized."

The short film "Stuff" chronicles the chaotic state of John Frusciante's life circa 1993, just after he quit the chili peppers. He was in a downward spiral of depression & drug use that seemingly could only end in death. It is remarkable that he found the inner strength to rise from the ashes, get clean and reclaim his life. I'm sure that having a family like the RHCP's, given their history with drug abuse and loss, played a big part in his recovery.

Stuff is still a beautiful film, even if it is a bit sad. It has wonderful music provided by the extraordinarily talented Frusciante. It was shot by friends Johnny Depp and Gibby Haynes, features a cameo by LSD pioneer Timothy Leary, and credits flower arrangements by Perry Ferrell. A must see!

Jag hör magiska och atmosfäriska ljud som förflyttar mig från min lägenhet i Göteborg till en annan värld som inte påminner om något annat. Har inhandlat den nya dubbel-DVD "Heima" av Sigur Ros. I högtalarna hörs spröda och majestätiska ljudarrangemang och på tvn visas live-bilder varvat med intervjuer. En totalupplevelse, iallafall ur ett "hemmaperspektiv".

"Heima" innehåller två dvder med musik, livebilder, intervjuer och vackra miljöbilder samt en exklusiv fotobok. En väl värd investering i en tid där musik har förvandlats till nerladdningsbart förbrukningsmaterial. Nu väntar jag bara på att få uppleva Sigur Ros live...
